Which according to you is the best way to judge a search engine? Is it by the results or is it by the content?
Well, these are some of the questions that are often asked but not so cleverly replied. When it comes to search engines, Google has always been the Boss. The only search engine on which percentage of people are reliant on. What percentage? It’s way beyond that. A day without Google is never so easy to pass. But today, the day has come while predicting for the future on where Google stands may be 10 years down the line and if at all there are going to be any rivals, who would be the real ones?
Surprisingly, we have got the answers today. Google Chairman Eric Schmidt has got all answers for us. And guess what? They all left me dumbfounded. In fact, the answers has brought up some interesting facts which went unnoticed.
Okay. Getting back to the normal state, if I had to ask anyone about Google’s competitors, I am more often supposed to hear Bing or Yahoo. Some say a few more. But all that makes some sense to me as I have had anticipated results of this kind. But what Eric Schmidt had said left me surprised.
“Many people think our main competition is Bing or Yahoo. But, really, our biggest search competitor is Amazon,” Schmidt said that in a speech in Berlin.
Being true, how many of us would have expected such a statement from the Chairman of Google? Well, there are evident reasons to say so.
Some of the interesting observations from Eric on Amazon left me inspiring. It is always good to have different perspectives towards a company and drawing some serious lessons from it is like a Master Class.
“People don’t think of Amazon as search, but if you are looking for something to buy you are more often than not looking for it on Amazon,” he said.
So, as far as Amazon is now concerned it is more than just an E-Commerce website. It was indeed good on Google’s part to predict what was actually coming their way. A best way to get prepared for the future.
“Someone, somewhere in a garage is gunning for us. I know, because not long ago we were in that garage. Change comes from where you least expect it,” he said.
Eric recalls the Google’s past. A great gesture indeed by a company that has been dominating the search engine industry for decades. And this is how they do. Like a Boss.
But as of now there is nothing such as a threat to Google but we will have to wait and see how they proceed further on this.
